Questions & Answers

Have a Question?

Ask a Question
  • Do I really need anchors or bracing? If so, how many do I need? Which style do you recommend?

Yes, anchors/bracing are important to the long-term stability of the edging.  In almost all cases, 2 per section is recommended. There are 2 choices:  1.  The universal turnbuckle style simply clips to the back of the edging bracket and is extended via a chain diagonally where a peg is pounded into the ground.  2.  The anchor post is screwed to the side of the bracket on the back of the edging and pounded into the ground vertically. The anchor post works well in normal soil conditions.  Concrete should be used around the post.  The universal turnbuckle brace works both in normal and soft ground conditions.  Please note that in soft ground conditions, concrete is recommended around the peg and nails as well. As far as ease of install.  Neither is hard to install, but the Universal turnbuckle style is probably the easier of the 2 methods.

  • Can the rigid and flexible edging be joined together?

Yes, they both have the same connectors, so they can be joined together.  In fact, the 9.5”, 15.75”, and 22” can all be connected together at the top.  This helps in situation where there is a slope, and you need to bury a portion of the edging.

  • What type of saw should I use if I need to cut the edging?

The manufacturers recommend an angle grinder.  The main point in selecting a saw to cut with is that it uses a metal cutting saw blade and that you are comfortable using it.  If you are not comfortable using a saw, we highly recommend getting a professional’s assistance.

  • When do I need to use a joining sleeve?

Joining sleeves are used to reconnect edging that has been cut.  If you cut the edging, therefore cutting off the pre-built-in connectors, and then need reconnect it to another piece and joining sleeve is used to re-join the pieces.

  • What is included in the price of a single section of edging?

Included in the price of the edging are 1 – 7-foot section, a joining plate to connect the edging to the next section, and 5 long twisted nails.  Bracing/anchors, premade corners, and joining sleeves are purchased separately.

  • What are the dimensions of the pre-made corners?

Each arm of the corner is inches.  So, 10 inches then a 90-degree bend and another 10 inches.

  • How heavy is each 22" panel?

The 22" panels weight about 48 pounds each.

  • Do you hammer it into place? How would it act as a retaining wall, or do you build the wall and then this is just decorative. I have a. narrow space and cannot build a traditional retaining wall. what I’m trying to retain is about one foot high and a gentle slope.

The edging uses long twisted nails that hammer into the bottom foot of the edging.  In addition you would need to use bracing to support its retaining function.  The edging is engineered to retain up to the level of the edging.  In other words, this particular size (22") can retain up to 22 inches of soil.

I find it much easier to see a demo than explain, so below are two helpful videos that show the install and bracing process.

Below is a video link that demonstrates how the edging is installed.

The straight edging worked perfectly for the landscape we were working with. The homeowner was exceptionally happy with the final product. Highly recommend this product. Erin at Henderson Supply was very helpful and informative.

HGS - Superb Company / 22" Ridigline - Superb Product

Was so impressed with the 22” Rigidline product end result and HGS service, decided to provide this detailed review to provide feedback to the manufacturer and hopefully some installation tips. My customer did not want the Cortin Steel so we cleaned the 10 panels with mineral spirits to remove the Cortin aging solution, then washed with soap, then after drying, lightly sanded and painted both sides with black satin Rustoleum paint. Two coats exterior and one coat interior which used 1 gallon. (Straightcurve – plz consider supplying this in black and realize scratching will be an issue so maybe include a small can of spray paint for touch-up?) I selected the harder route by installing the metal bracing for support because we were using the planter to hold a hedge. Pounding these into hard rocky soil was not easy. Some hit rock so had to cut a few of them off using a sawzall. (Straightcurve – maybe put an angled end on one side?). Also while assembling, the upper clips joining two panels kept falling off which was very frustrating. (Straightcurve – plz note). We bent six corners, per online video instructions, in building this planter and it went well. The only comment here is when you bend your last section to turn back and reconnect with the opposite side it is tricky to get the right distance to connect with the joint on the opposite side and achieve a perfect right angle. We measured 3 times and still have a slight not right angle at one end, which you can see in the picture. We also found it easier to place sticks under the panels for leveling and sink the stakes into the ground with the stakes in place. We then filled the planters 1/3 full with dirt, watered well, then removed the sticks and no panel movement occurred. Also, you can see we placed boards across the planter at each panel connection to prevent deflection, which worked well. Finally, these panels are long and relatively heavy, so give thought on how a delivery driver can use a pallet jacket to drop the panels as close to the worksite as possible. Thanks again Erin for your superb support!

Excellent product, easy to use.

This was our second purchase of 22” height planter panels, after enjoying the experience of our first purchase. On both occasions we found the product easy to install and were very happy with the final outcome for the price paid. These products don’t install themselves, and do require some labor, especially if you’re digging into a slope as we did, but we believe we saved thousands in the process by being able to order pre manufactured panels and install them ourselves, rather than depend on custom work.
